    How fixed deposit interest is calculated

    With a cumulative FD the bank adds your interest to the deposit at regular intervals, and later interest is earned on that larger balance. Most Indian banks compound quarterly; the more often interest is added, the higher the maturity amount.

    Maturity = P × (1 + r / n) ^ (n × t)

    • P = the amount you deposit
    • r = annual interest rate, as a decimal (7% = 0.07)
    • n = how many times a year interest is compounded (4 for quarterly)
    • t = tenure in years (18 months = 1.5)

    Frequently asked questions

    Does compounding frequency matter?

    Yes. The same stated rate earns more when interest is added more often. The effective annual yield shown under the result is the rate you actually earn per year after compounding.

    Is FD interest taxable?

    Yes. Interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and the bank may deduct TDS once interest crosses a threshold. This calculator shows interest before any tax.

    What if my FD pays interest out regularly instead of at maturity?

    A payout (non-cumulative) FD does not compound, because the interest leaves the deposit. Its total interest is closer to simple interest, so choose the compounding that matches your FD type.

    Why does my bank show a slightly different amount?

    Banks may use exact day counts, treat the last part-period differently or round at different stages. Use this as a close estimate and confirm the final figure with your bank.
